Day 102: Tuesday, June 28 - Ted Nuttall - a bit more

Finally found this one photo that I've been looking for from Ted Nuttall's workshop last week.  The first day is always busy, frantic, consuming....and Ted demos and starts a painting which he then works on all week.  On Tuesday, we all ganged up on him and asked him to "please, please, please" - draw a basic face and one more time, "Start over".  His initial washes of cad red light, cad yellow, cerulean...........It's all over so fast that you're left wondering how in the heck did he do that!  So here, up close and personal, is the second start of a painting from last week.

I then decided to go on a hunt for the photographs of the Workshop Attendees that must have ended up in the computer's trash can....and sure enough. So here's presenting

Day 97: Tuesday, June 14 - Ted Nuttall Workshop

Off to a great start yesterday with a demo of the first
transparent watercolor washes, "a la Ted".

Ted teaches portraiture from photographs.

Marie Burdick, intently paying attention, did some wonderful work
in this her second workshop with Ted

Gail Green, as intent on taking notes as Marie was,
did some fabulous work in her third? workshop with Ted.
She used photos of grandparents and her father as a small boy as her references.

Day 84: Thursday, May 19 - Painting of Ted

Ever since the first time I hired Ted Nuttall to come to California and to teach a watercolor workshop, I've had this picture of him. It must have arrived via a piece of email or some website and I've had the goal of painting it, in watercolor for these 3 or 4 years.

Instead? I just started an oil painting class on Sunday afternoons and grabbed up the photo of Ted and took it with me last Sunday.  Did a fast sketch onto the canvas (and as you can see it was a truly quick sketch - no measurements, no nada) and started painting away.

In watercolor? The sketch is everything. It takes hours. You measure. You erase. You paint carefully.........one pass washes.....

With oil? Wow!!! I just layered on the colors, moving eyebrows, moving lips, changing noses.......it was so much fun!!

And it looks not one iota like Ted. Oh well. I had a good time and there's always tomorrow, tomorrow as Little Annie said!

Ted's workshop, this year, 2011, starts on June 13.  Can't wait.

Day 40: Tuesday, March 1

A painting challenge for all of us who love to do portrait work!  Lee Brown of A Day Not Wasted has posted his latest challenge: a glorious photo of a man playing the saxophone in Central Park. We have the whole month to paint it (or portions thereof) and get it posted back to Lee.

This exercise could be in preparation for the Ted Nuttall Portait Painting Workshop that I'm sponsoring June 13-17 in Glendale, California. Feel free to contact me if you have any interest in Ted's class. I have 2 openings left.

Day 18, January 21, Friday - Ted Nuttall

I'm bringing Ted Nuttall to Glendale, California in June, the 13-17 to be exact. It will be a week long watercolor portrait class held in the Brand Studio, a fabulous place to paint.  These classes fill quickly and I'm taking registrations now so if you're interested, get in touch.
